Start with responsibilities

Scalable architecture begins by deciding what each platform is responsible for. When two systems both believe they own the same data or decision, integration problems follow.

A five-layer view

  • Engagement: email, web, social and events where customers interact.
  • Orchestration: marketing automation and journey logic.
  • Data: CRM, CDP or warehouse as systems of record.
  • Intelligence: analytics, scoring and AI services.
  • Governance: consent, access, naming and change control across all layers.

Integration principles

Prefer one direction of truth per field. Document every sync with its trigger, frequency and conflict rule. Treat integrations as products with owners, not one-off projects.

If an integration has no named owner, it has an unknown failure date.

Planning for growth

New regions and tools should plug into the existing layers rather than creating parallel stacks. An architecture decision record keeps choices explainable over time.
